Friday Music: So If You’re Lonely

ff and sophie stampIt appears that Archduke Franz Ferdinand was not a friendly man. He argued often with other leaders and wanted Austria-Hungary to behave more aggressively – like other empires. He was described as dark in looks and emotions.

He did love his wife, Countess Sophie Chotek, hiding his relationship with her for two years and marrying her despite tradition and with the disapproval of Emperor Franz Joseph. Sophie could not share his title, nor would their children be included in the line of succession to the throne.

On a trip to Sarajevo, a young Serbian Nationalist threw a grenade at Ferdinand’s car but the driver accelerated and the grenade exploded under the next car in the entourage. Ferdinand was his normal, cordial self, reportedly shouting at the Governor, “So this is how you welcome your guests – with bombs?”

A few hours later, on their drive to the hospital to visit the wounded from the earlier attack, another member of the Black Hand shot Sophie in the stomach and Ferdinand in the neck. Protesting that his own wound was nothing, he called to her “Sophie dear! Don’t die! Stay alive for our children!”

Archduke Franz Ferdinand’s assassination was one of several factors blamed for the start of World War I.

The lyrics to “Take Me Out” by the band ‘Franz Ferdinand’ are a reference to that moment, as he sat dying and watching his beloved wife die beside him.

“Take Me Out”

So if you’re lonely
You know I’m here waiting for you
I’m just a crosshair
I’m just a shot away from you
And if you leave here
You leave me broken, shattered, I lie
I’m just a crosshair
I’m just a shot, then we can die

I know I won’t be leaving here with you

I say don’t you know
You say you don’t know
I say… take me out!

I say you don’t show
Don’t move, time is slow
I say… take me out!

I say you don’t know
You say you don’t know
I say… take me out!

If I move this could die
If eyes move this could die
I want you…to take me out!

I know I won’t be leaving here (with you)
I know I won’t be leaving here
I know I won’t be leaving here (with you)
I know I won’t be leaving here with you

I say don’t you know?
You say you don’t know
I say take me out

If I wane, this can die
If I wane, this can die
I want you to take me out

If I move, this could die
If eyes move, this could die
Come on, take me out

I know I won’t be leaving here
I know I won’t be leaving here
I know I won’t be leaving here
I know I won’t be leaving here with you
