Friday Music: Short Skirt, Long Jacket

Every time this song comes on, I get the playful eye-roll from my wife.  “Oh, you want me to get up early and stay up late?”

It’s all in good fun, but at the same time there is something to the meaning of this song.

While some people think it’s a critique of society’s unrealistic expectations of women, I take it at face value.  The guy  wants a Proverbs 31 wife, albeit unknowingly I’m sure.

The Proverbs wife “rises while it is yet night” and “does not eat the bread of idleness”, Cake’s girl gets up early and stays up late.

The Proverbs wife “opens her mouth with wisdom”, Cake’s girl has a “mind like a diamond” and “knows what’s best”.

You get the idea.

In the end though, there is at least one important difference between the two women.  They may both be beautiful, industrious, and wealthy, but their motivations are different.

The Short Skirt girl cares about changing her name and picking out the right car.  The Proverbs wife knows that “Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”

But we’re not off the hook here men.  Of course a wife should serve her family out of obedience to the Lord and a love for them, but it sure helps to encourage her when the “heart of her husband trusts in her”, he praises her saying “Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all” and her “children rise up and call her blessed”.

Enjoy.

“Short Skirt / Long Jacket”

I want a girl with a mind like a diamond
I want a girl who knows what’s best
I want a girl with shoes that cut
And eyes that burn like cigarettes
I want a girl with the right allocations
Who’s fast and thorough
And sharp as a tack
She’s playing with her jewelry
She’s putting up her hair
She’s touring the facility
And picking up slack
I want a girl with a short skirt and a lonnnng jacket……
I want a girl who gets up early
I want a girl who stays up late
I want a girl with uninterrupted prosperity
Who uses a machete to cut through red tape
With fingernails that shine like justice
And a voice that is dark like tinted glassShe is fast and thorough
And sharp as a tack
She’s touring the facility
And picking up slackI want a girl with a short skirt and a lonnnnng…. lonnng jacketI want a girl with a smooth liquidation
I want a girl with good dividends
At Citibank we will meet accidentally
We’ll start to talk when she borrows my penShe wants a car with a cupholder arm rest
She wants a car that will get her there
She’s changing her name from Kitty to Karen
She’s trading her MG for a white Chrysler La Baron
I want a girl with a short skirt and a lonnnnggggggggg jacket
