Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats. –H.L. Mencken
I was sitting in my home office just before dinner when the phone line I use for business rang. I don’t usually answer it, but I saw the caller ID said “DE Po Ben” — Delaware Police Benefit, so I decided to have a little fun.
I answered and the man was very nice, asked me how I was, then introduced himself and the police organization and asked if I would be supporting them again this year.
I have never given money to them, so saying “again” is a little disingenuous, but OK.
I told him that I have never and would never give money to them. They take money by force through taxes and then have the nerve to call and ask for more.
Normally I would think this was just a telemarketing scam, but this guy was really offended. His voice immediately changed and he asked me “Well, what kind of job do you do?”
I told him that it was irrelevant.
He asked again, “Do you put yourself in harm’s way every day?”
I said yes, I leave my house every day and drive a car.
He said, “That’s not the same and you’re just trying to dance around the issue.”
He was really mad, and I had a lot more to say to him, but before I could get another word in, he threw this out and then hung up.
“We have your name and address, Mr. Clark. You have a nice evening.”
There it is, the mindset of a cop. Bow down before me or I will hurt you.
If he isn’t a cop he could be, he certainly has the attitude down pat.
It reminded me of this great video. NB: This is the G-rated version, the original has a lot of foul language.
